[last updated 07/12/09]Read our report on the Southern Area Cyclocross Championships. After another wet week in the UK the South's top cyclocross riders gathered at Southampton Sports Centre for the South of England Cyclocross Championships. As with the previous weeks event conditions were very muddy and would mean frequent bike changes. It was going to be a busy day in the pits for those operating the pressure washers! The days racing was kicked off with the Youth event just before lunch. Harvey Lowe(Hargroves Cycles) was in fine form in the Under 14s event and romped home to another 1st place.
photo: Graham Robins John Dibben(Hargroves Cycles) had a great ride in the Under 16s but was pipped to the post by Daniel Murphy(Team Keyne). The next event would see the Juniors, Women and Vets all kick off within a few minutes of each other. In the Junior race it was obvious from the start that only three riders would feature - Luke Gray(Hargroves Cycles), Steve James(Pedalon) and Andy Hargroves(Hargroves Cycles). After a fast start Gray and James started to stretch the gap and it became a two man battle. Gray started to show his class though as the lighter of the two riders stretched his advantage and it was clear James could not respond - a well earned victory for Luke and a solid third place for Andy.
In the Vets race eventual winner Tony Green(GA Cycles) fought a hard 3 way battle with Andy Shaw(Raleigh Avanti) and Keith Sheridan(Corrinium CC).
In the womens event Caroline Goward(Hargroves Cycles) secured a place on the podium for a well earned 3rd place. The event was won by Maddie Horton(Team Certini) with Genevieve Whitson(Swindon RC) in 2nd.
In the main event of the afternoon Stu Bowers(Hargroves Cycles) was back to defend his title in the Senior race. A lightning fast start saw a familiar group muscle to the front including Bowers, Lansley, Cotty, Macdonald and Doyle. It wouldnt take long for Bowers to make his mark on the race however. A masterclass in riding in muddy conditions was being delivered by Bowers. Adrian Lansley and Mike Cotty were giving it 100% but 120% would be needed to stick with Bowers and neither were going to be able to find that sort of edge. Behind the leading group Mike Warner(Hargroves Cycles) and Mike Groves(Hargroves Cycles) were showing good form as they battled with Sean Williams to secure 7th and 8th spot. The group ahead of them consisted of Matt Macdonald(Hargroves Cycles), Crispin Doyle(Swindon RC), Sam Allen(AW Cycles) and Mike Cotty(Wheelbase Cannondale). Cotty looked determind to secure third place at the front of this group as it became apparent that catching Bowers or even Lansley would be one step too far(even for the superfit Cotty). Mike was rewarded with a spot on the podium for his efforts. Bowers didnt put a foot wrong and was rewarded with retaining his crown and the top spot on the podium. Adrian Lansley(Pedalon) was 2nd and Mike Cotty(Wheelbase Cannondale) was 3rd.

02/12/2009This week Phil Glasgow is on his way to completing the final hour with his NFCC team in the Pudsey 24hr Trackathon raising money for the BBC's Children in Need Appeal. Along with 7 other teams a total of 588 miles were covered in the 24hr endurance event at an average speed of 24.5 mph. The event is on track to raise in excess of £8000 for the appeal.
30/11/2009Wessex League Round 9 - Oxonian Cross After another week of heavy rain over 100 riders assembled for Saturdays Oxonian CC Cyclocross at Cowley School. A revised course took the riders up to a previously un-used football pitch in an effort to eliminate some of the bottle necks caused at the previous race.
It was obvious after only 1 practice lap that bike changes would be the order of the day and the grass and leaves collecting round the bottom bracket area and brakes would once again be a problem for most riders. Mike Groves (Hargroves Cycles) made a lightning fast start and was into the first right hand bend just ahead of the chasing pack. After the first section of trees however it was Jamie Newall(VC Meudon) that would once again take control from here on.
Mike Cotty(Wheelbase/Cannondale) and Matt Macdonald(Hargroves Cycles) were the only two riders who looked like they could trouble him. It wasnt long before Jamie began to stretch his advantage though and it became obvious that the only thing that would stop him now would be a serious mechanical. Lucklily this was not the case and Jamie romped home to a well deserved victory.
Mike Cotty(Wheelbase/Cannondale) took a well deserved second place(when is that win going to happen Mike!) and Matt Wakefield who isnt known in the Wessex League out sprinted Mike Groves(Hargroves Cycles) to take third place.
In the Youths race it was Harvey Lowe (Hargroves Cycles) who seized the opportunity to take another good win. Luke Cowley (Swindon RC) struggled with his second bike and Harvey didnt need an invitation to capitalise on this. Furter photos can be found on our Facebook group Further photos and report over at Graham Robins and British Cycling Seniors Youth Under 12s 26/11/2009Wessex League update - Matt Macdonald(Hagroves Cycles) leads the way After 8 rounds of the Wessex Cyclocross league Hargroves Cycles rider Matt Macdonald has finally found his way to the top of the leaderboard. As most people will know, Pedalon's Adrian Lansley has been on superb form winning just about every event this season. With only 6 points between them its going to be a close run thing.

Our sale has been an amazing success, selling more bikes at lower prices than ever before. We are however becomg a victim of our own success, with stock running out quickly! People have twigged that next years' bikes cost more for no gain in equipment, so 2009 bikes are the ones to grab. Still some left, but you're going to have to be quick.
That time of year is here again. We have tons of 2009 bikes and kit on sale. With 2010 bikes coming and costing more than ever, there has never been a better time to buy. Be quick though, stock is going to run out quickly!
Our Fareham store is busy looking for a new addition for the motivated and busy shop floor. Pop in store to apply or send an e-mail. We need your CV, cover letter and make sure you answer our question. You'll find it on our jobs page.
Most Cube bikes have now had a 15% discount applied. The Ltd models are not available on discount. Buy quick before they're all gone!!!
About ten minutes ago, the first 2010 Specialized bikes arrived on the TNT truck. In the form of 6x Allez Triple models. So new are these bikes, there aren't even any photos to show on the website. If you want one, please give us a call.
We can't advertise the price online, but call us to find out the great deal that's available on the Scott Aspect 45 right now. It's got a high quality aluminium frame, Shimano hydraulic disc brakes and Shimano drivetrain. Get one while stocks last!
One of the largest employers in Southampton have signed up to Cyclescheme.co.uk. Hargroves Cycles were on hand to exhibit at their two Southampton locations last this week. We were warmly welcomed and will see them again soon when they move to their new prestigeous headquarters.
