25th Novemeber - Message From Ian Macdonald (Secretary Wessex Cyclo Cross)

At last weeks race at Thruxton I thought what an ideal time to announce incase anyone didn’t know, that the Dicot race would count as a Wesex event, don’t panic, it does count for all categories except the Under 12’s.

When I made the announcement before their race I completely forgot that the Under 12 would not count as they do an U-12 event and a separate U-10 event, by doing this we can’t take points off for the Wessex league. I must apologise we did figure that out during our early talks with Didcot Phoenix but early on a Sunday morning it had completely slipped my mind.

22nd Novemeber - Important Notice

To all Wessex League riders and their supporters

The Wessex Cyclo-Cross League is a well established racing league which is not only known for its fantastic racing but also for its fantastic camaraderie, supportive spirit and welcoming atmosphere.

This weekend, the Thruxton event, was a well organised race with a  great attendance, unfortunately some very “un-Wessex” behaviour took place, where both Officials and volunteers were verbally abused and one physically assaulted.
This kind of activity cannot and will not be accepted, please help us stamp out this activity, ensure that riders, supporters and people connected to your club understand what is acceptable.

We all want to do well, challenge ourselves and others but we rely on a fantastic group of volunteers, organisers and officials to make events happen. So if people, albeit a small minority, cause offence, then we will lose these key peopleand events and we will not haveany races.

PLEASE MAKE IT CLEAR TO ALL YOUR MEMBERS BRITISH CYCLING WILL NOT TOLERATE ANY BEHAVIOUR DETRIMENTAL TO THE SPORT, ITS VOLUNTEERS AND FELLOW PARTICIPANTS

22nd Novemeber - Wessex League Round 7 - Graham Robins reports

Round seven of the Wessex League was held in the grass land just outside of the Thruxton Motor Racing circuit five miles west of Andover on the Hampshire-Wilshire Borders.

The course was laid out with miles of tape and the course wound its way up and down the banking using full use of the space provided. To break things up there were a couple of jumps and a long Belgium style sand pit, which was ride able.

The morning started of very foggy and chilly but by the time the seniors raced the fog had cleared and the sun had come out.

Once gridded and away it was Jody Crawforth (Hargroves Cycles) who started to show his class as he soon opened up a gap over League leader Michael Cotty (Cannondale Racing) and Dan Lewis (RAF CC with Chris Minter (Pedal On) and Crispin Doyle (Swindon RC) not too far behind.

Crawforth was eking out time on each lap and entertaining the crowd gathered around the jumps by ‘bunny hoping’ them on each lap. Cotty was 19 seconds back and Doyle was 36 seconds down on the leader.

Next up was Dan Lewis and close to him was Matt Macdonald (Stevens UK). These places did not change much until Matt got past Crispin and Dan for a fine third place.

The combined vet, junior and women’s races as usual saw the largest group of the day and the most competitive of the day. The fog had lifted enough to see the whole course from the marquee and start finish line.

The first rider to show on the front was junior Matt Hargroves (Hargroves Cycles) with vet Sean Williams (Wight Mountain) 16secs down and junior Matt Woods (Swindon RC) third 14 seconds behind him.

The leading Women was Tamina Oliver (Squadra Donna) who had trouble clipping into her pedals from the start line and then had to stop to refit her chain followed by the Wight Mountain pair of Nina French and Sarah Woods.

Once the race settled into some sort of order it was Matt Hargroves from Sean Williams with Matt Woods third. Next up was Dave McNamara (GWR) and Keith Sheridan (Hargroves Cycles). Having a little tussle of their own was Malcolm Cross and Martin Eadon from Hargroves and Stevens UK respectively.

The leading duo was now pulling away from third and this is how the race played out. The women’s race was also decided on the early laps and places did not alter throughout the race.

The morning got underway in the fog with the under 12s race. A rather large entry kept the lap scorers busy as the young riders sped around a small course laid out in the middle of the main venue. The race was eventually won by Harry Dridge (Southdown Velo) from Bethany Lewis (Palmer Park Velo) and team mate Jay Allen.

The youth race was held over the full course size including jumps and sand. The long uphill run out soon sorted them out and it wasn’t long before Harvey Lowe (Hargroves Cycles) was opening up a lead over Robbie Bolwell (Wight Mountain).

Jack Saunders (Swindon RC) was next 35secs down and Jack Phillips (Banjo Cycles) was a further 10secs back but was having trouble staying upright in the sand pit. The first girls were Zoe Sheehan (Swindon RC) with Bethany Taylor (BCDS) not to far back.

Harvey soon had a large lead when Robbie slipped from his bike and getting the chain jammed in the rear sprocket causing the wheel to lock up forcing him to shoulder his bike and run to the pits for a change of bike.

With a couple of laps completed Harvey’s lead over Robbie was now 2min 30secs, third was Jack Saunders (Swindon RC) at 3min 48secs. Bethany was now applying the pressure on Zoe and soon passed her with Emily Wadsworth (Beeline Cycles) now in third.

Leaving the rest in his wake Harvey coasted to a comfortable win by over 2min 30secs.

The next round of the Wessex League is next Sunday at Reading in the joint promoted event with the Central League.

14th November - National Trophy Southampton

A fantastic days racing at the Southampton Sports Centre - full marks to the organisers and ALL the marshalls and volunteers involved in putting the event on.  Lots of Wessex League riders were competing with some great rides in particular coming from Crispin Doyle, Mike Cotty, Matt Macdonald,Andrew Hargroves, Luke Gray and Ben Sumner - all of whom finished inside the top 15 of the senior race!  Wessex riders really are becoming a force to be reckoned with and proving what a strong league we have.

I spent the day behind the video camera so please take a look at the footage below, report available here from British Cycling

9th November - National Trophy Preview - Southampton

Hopefully anyone reading this will already know that the National Trophy comes to Southampton this weekend - Sunday 13th November. Kerie is still in need of help - if you can spare a few hours please contact Kerie - Kerie.Wallace@trant.co.uk

If you haven't ridden the course before, you can get on Saturday to practice and learn the lines.  The course is a well proven circuit and follows the lines of previous National Trophies and even the National Champs.

The start is based over the far left hand side of the circuit - its a slight uphill drag and should give everyone enough time to find some sort of position without incident.  From here the course will climb slightly into the woods and follow some bark chipped single track until popping out of the woods and onto the grass once more.

The course then heads away from the main arena and down the hill to the bottom of the cricket pitches on a slight off camber descent. This is the lowest part of the course and from here there are a number of 90 degree and 180 degree dead turns to test even the fittest rider. The course once again follows the edge of the cricket pitch and climbs up towards the finish before dropping back down towards the road after a number of sweeping turns.

Once on the road the course climbs up the tarmac to the finish line and then onto the pits. Dropping down from the pits there are a couple of 180 degree turns before following the other cricket pitch towards a sharp bank which the better riders will ride and weaker riders will struggle on.  A few more winding turns and you are back to the start and the drag up once more.

National Trophy Series Round 3

There are lots of Wessex League riders down to ride so it'll be well worth watching if you can. In the Senior mens race we have some strong riders - watch out for Steve James(Hargroves Cycles). Steve is currently the top Under-23 rider so wil be wearing the green jersey - easy to spot! Current Wessex League champion and leader Mike Cotty(Cannondale) will be riding.  Mike has had some very strong wins recently so expect to see him fighting for a strong position inside the top 20. Crispin Doyle (Swindon RC) is another one to look out for and easy to spot in orange and blue.  Crispin has been out in Belgium racing so again he will be looking to crack the top 20.  Matt Macdonald(Stevens Bikes/Hargroves Cycles) will also be up there. Matt finished 24th at the last National Trophy and knows the course as well as anyone out there. Dan Lewis and Ben Sumner are also worth looking out for  - if I haven't mentioned your name - you obvsiously aren't fast enough ;-) but good luck to all!

Some video of the course on Boxing Day is below, so get watching and learn the course now!

4th November - Wessex League Round 5 - Oxford - Graham Robins reports

Today’s races were held at the campus of Westminster College near to the centre of Oxford. The course was laid out over a couple of playing fields and a large wooded area which borders the college.

Michael Cotty takes victory in the fifth round of the Wessex League.

The morning started dry and windy, the grass was a little damp on top due to overnight rain, however the weather was to take a turn for the worse and rain came in for the combined Vet/Women/Junior race and this helped make to top surface very slippery in places. Although the rain had relented in time for the senior race there was still a damp feel to the air.

In the senior race, the first to show were Ben Sumner (Beeline Cycles) and Michael Cotty(Wheelbase/Cannondale) with James Cotty (Wheelbase/Cannondale) 32 seconds behind.

The leading group was completed by Peter Kench (Team GWR), Jamie Norfolk (Pedal On), Steve Knight Jewson/Thule and James Astbury (Hargroves Cycles).

After a couple of laps Michael and Ben had extended their lead to over one minute over Peter with James slipping back and Jamie, Steve and James going the other way.

By mid way the race lead was Michael Cotty from Ben by 8secs with Peter Kench followed by Steve Knight and Jamie Norfolk. Both James Cotty and James Astbury had slipped back.

With a couple of laps to go Michael put in a couple of quick ones to increase his lead over Ben to over one minute with Steve Knight now a further three minutes behind.

Steve Knight was a good one as he asked to be seeded at the back and had worked his way to the front in only a couple of laps.

Just as the combined Veterans/Junior/Women’s race began the rain started to fall, adding sheen to the grass which caught out several riders.

After the run out around the fields the first to show at the front was junior rider Matt Woods (Hargroves Cycles) and vet rider Will Girvan (NHRC).

The first woman was Claire Smith (Swindon RC) with Sarah Woods (Wight Mountain) up next followed by Claire Galloway (Zappi’s).

Over the next couple of laps Matt and Will stayed away working hard to extend their lead. The next riders up were David Phillips and Peter Hutchinson (Swindon RC) with next rider Robin Wilmott (GA Cycles) next.

As the two leaders came into the finishing area the chequered flag was waving, Matt was in front of Will and hence won the race however both riders had said they did not hear the bell and both looked quizzically at the finish line thinking they had a least a lap to go.

Just after the finish line the two riders spoke and said neither had heard the bell and were very surprised to see the flag. Will was magnanimous at the finish saying he was pleased to finish behind his younger counterpart and to collect full points for the veterans table.

The youth riders competed on a long course run the opposite way round to the younger riders.

After the first lap it was Jack Saunders (Swindon RC) who had pulled out a 25secs gap over Jack Phillips (Banjo Cycles). Next up was Tom Sewell a further 33secs down and then Edward Gronbech 22 secs behind them.

Jack Sewell continued to open up a large gap with Jack Phillips now drooping back. The minor places had not changed and the first girl was Bethany Taylor who had got passed Zoe Sheehan.

There was quite an interesting race within the race with four girls Bethany Taylor (BCDS), Megan Lewis (Palmer Park Velo), Bethany George and team mate Zoe Sheehan (Swindon RC) all quite close together.

At the bell Jack Saunders was all alone with Jack Phillips second. On the finish line Megan Lewis was just piped by Bethany Taylor with Bethany George also close by.

First to make a break in the Under-12/10 race was Bethany Lewis (PPV) who along with Harry Dridge (Southdown Velo) opened up a small lead. Close by was Erin Baker (Southdown Velo), also not too far behind was Ieuan Woods (Charlotteville CC).

On the second lap Bethany and Harry had pulled away and started working together, Ieuan had now passed Erin and Liam Sewell (Swindon RC) was the next rider up. Bethany made her attack on the last few corners pulling away from Harry who in turn was clear of Ieuan.

The next round of the Wessex League is at Thruxton Motor Racing circuit Hampshire on 20th November.

Anyone who wants to stay all day is more than welcome to, as the course is being used for practice and so we could need a few running repairs.

For the Sunday, race day, I need 23 people in total; 18 marshals to man the six pedestrian crossing points, 5 to be mobile course repairers/help repair any of the course first thing in the morning. Times for this will be course repairers meet at the Cyclo Cross Container at 07.30hrs, event marshals to meet at the Changing Rooms, by the all weather pitches at 09.00hrs.

Lunch will be provided for everyone on the Sunday.

27th October - Wessex League Round 5 - Preview

This is the second year at this venue - please note it is NOT at Oxford Academy in Cowley.  The location is Westminster Sports Centre,Oxford Brookes University, Harcourt Hill Campus, Oxford, OX2 9AT. Last years course was made up of a flat playing field section which was very flat and fast, a horrible wooded section which was boggy and bumpy and a second field section which was again pretty flat.  Im hoping the wooded section will be revised as it really wasnt great.  There is plenty of parking and sign on was in the main sports hall reception last year.

If you are heading up to Leicester for National Trophy Round 2 then good luck!

The prizes were presented by local shop owner Rikki Pankhurst from AW Cycles.

The day got underway with the young riders in the u10 and u12’s races. With league leader Ben Tulett away it was Harry Dridge (Southdown Velo) that was seeded first on the line. 16th October - Wessex League Round 3 - Basingstoke - Graham Robins reports

Michael Cotty (Wheelbase-Cannondale) won his second Wessex League race in a row when he crossed the line almost a minute and a half ahead of his nearest rival at the end of the North Hampshire Road Club event in War Memorial Park, Basingstoke, on Sunday.

Cotty, the 32-year-old from Rownhams in Hampshire, was 1-22 ahead of rival Dan Lewis (RAF CA) at the end of the event, which was run off over park land and included the wooded copse to the south. For the third race in a row we were greeted with blue skies and warm weather and the course was dry and firm giving us a fast set of races.

The senior race got underway with five riders altogether for four laps before the gaps started to appear.

The five riders - Michael Cotty, Adrain Lansley (Pedal on), Dan Lewis (RAF CA), Ben Sumner (unattached) and Will Bjergfelt (Motorpoint Pro Cycling) - soon pulled away from the rest of the bunch and set about staying away.

The first to make a mistake was Lewis who, on the off-camber turns, dropped his bike but soon got up to continue. Sumner then started to pull away from Lansley and Bjergfelt.

Lansley was the next to drop away and soon he retired feeling un-well.

Bjergfelt then started to drop off the pace, perhaps beginning to feel the pace of a hard road season.

While all were losing ground behind him Cotty settled into a rhythm and started to build a commanding lead. With a couple of laps to go it was Cotty from Lewis at 43 seconds with Sumner at 53 seconds.

With Bjergfelt now slipping back, Cotty took the bell with a lead of 50 seconds over Lewis with Sumner now a minute and a half back, and Bjergfelt a further 50 seconds behind him.

As Cotty rode into the flat park between the football pitches, both Lewis and Sumner couldn’t be seen and Cotty coasted to a comfortable win.

The combined race for juniors women and veterans saw a very strong entry across all the different groups.

The first to show at the front were Matt Hargroves along with Hargroves team mate Harry Franklin. The vet race leaders were Keith Sheridan (Hargroves Cycles) along with Sean Williams (Wight Mountain) and Mike Groves (Stevens UK/Hargroves).

The women’s race leader was Claire Smith who was clear of Tamina Oliver (Squadra Donne).

The front five men were all together at one point but soon gaps started to appear and Matt Hargroves soon took control of the race.

The veteran men were a bit closer together with Sean Mike and Keith all racing together, Kevin Knox (Vicious Velo) was a little way behind but was unable to close the gap.

A very large entry contested the under 10s and under 12a race, with Ben Tulett (Herne Hill YCC) in complete control and winning his second race in a row with Bethany Lewis second on her first appearance this season, and then came Harry Dridge (SDV) coming in third who now leads the league table.

The under 10s had a fun race with Alexia Hawkins (PPV) winning just ahead of Ryan Hodgkyns (Poole Wheelers) and Anna Wadsworth (Beeline Cycles) third.

13th October - Basingstoke Cyclocross Preview

This Sunday sees Round 3 of the Wessex League take place at War Memorial Park in Basingstoke.  This is the 3rd time this veune has been used, this Sunday looks to be significantly drier than last year - for those that remember it was cold and very wet.  The race is a Cat A - this means you can expect to see riders from other leagues travelling down on a quest for national ranking points.  If last year is anything to go by youll be racing on a relatively flat grassy course with a few sharp banks thrown in for good measure.  The course is pretty fast and has a limited amount of wooded / technical sections.  Parking is on tarmac and can be quite tight - there is an overflow area also.  A link to Graham Robins photos of last year is here.

3rd October - Hargroves Cycles Swindon Cross - Graham Robins reports

Win for Cotty

On one of the hottest days of the year a couple of hundred cyclists’s descended on Lydiard Park in Swindon for the second round of the Wessex League. Beautiful sunshine and high temperatures did not deter from a fast and entertaining day in the park. The course was mainly park land with its twists and turns and a technical single track in the woods.

Under 12/Go-Race

The morning got underway with an under 12’s and a Go-Ride race which attracted over sixty young riders. Within the first lap Ben Tulett (HHCCC) pulled out a commanding lead over a fast charging Harry Dridge (Southdown Velo) and Charlie Clark (Hillingdon Slipstream). Close by was Jay Allen (Palmer Park) and Tom Sewell (Swindon RC). The leading places did not change until the last lap when Jay got a slow puncture allowing Tom to slip by, but he still managed to coax his bike to the finish line for fifth.

Result
1st Ben Tulett HHVCC
2nd Harry Dridge Southdown Velo
3rd Charlie Clark Hillingdon Slipstream
4th Tom Sewell Swindon RC
5th Jay Allen Palmer Park

Youth

Next up was the youth race, with a strong field representing Hargroves Cycles. The race got underway and soon Tom Franklin and Harvey Lowe (Hargroves Cycles) opened a gap as they worked together and pulled away from team mate Daniel Tulett with Robbie Bolwell (Wight Mountain) right behind him. With the two leaders away they rest of the entries were soon spread across the park.
For the second week running Harvey parted company with his bike, but this time he had time to remount and catch up with Tom. Harvey sat there on the wheel awaiting his opportunity to attack and saw his chance in the single track wooded section and got away to finish well clear of Tom, with Daniel third and Robbie in fourth.

Junior/Women’s/Veterans

After a short break to allow the large number of hardy marshals to take on fluid the next race was the combined Junior/women’s/Vet race. The first lap saw the young Hargroves riders Matt Hargroves and Harry Franklin pull out a strong lead with the next riders into view were the veteran riders of Sean Williams (Wight Mountain), Keith Sheridan (Hargroves Cycles), Will Girvan (NHRC), Dave McMullen (GWR) and Kevin Knox (Vicious Velo). The first women were Claire Smith (Swindon RC) who was well clear of Caroline Goward (Scott Contessa).

The race soon settled in and the two leaders were never challenged throughout the race. Most of the action was coming from the vets as the group of four soon became five then six before Kevin and Dave slipped away when first will slipped back and Sean Williams slipped of his bike on the beech nuts strewn across one corner. This slip might have damaged Sean’s rear wheel as he had to disconnect his rear brakes and finish the race with just his fronts.

Towards the end of the race Will Girvan was putting in a strong challenge but the leading vets were clear, and it was Dave who finished clear of Kevin. The combined race was won by Matt Hargroves with Dave McMullen claiming the vets win and Claire Smith ‘taking a break’ from her organising duties the romp home first in the women’s race.

Seniors

The feature race of the day saw a very strong field line up at the start to take on an hour of racing in the bright sunshine with very little wind to cool the riders, even under the trees it was still very warm. The first lap saw the leading group of six all together and already pulling out a gap. First rider to lead through the technical section was last week’s winner Steve James (Hargroves Cycles) closely followed by Crispin Doyle (Swindon RC),Michael Cotty (Wheeelbase-Cannondale), Will Bjergfelt (Motorpoint Procycling), Adrain Lansley (PedalOn) and Dan Lewis (RAF) with Sam Allen (Hennebont Cycling) fresh from a season riding in France as part of a French semi-pro team close by.

On the second lap the leaders came into the woods with Steve still leading Crispin with Michael Cotty, Steve slipped allowing the others by and this is when Michael attacked. He was third into the trees but first one out and with a small lead. The first casualty was Steve Jones who was felling unwell and retired at the end of the lap.

As the race progressed Michael opened up a gap of over 30secs with the rest of the chasing bunch all together. The chasing group of five were all together for a couple of laps, until Crispin saw his chance to attack and pulled away from Dan, who in turn could not chase him down because he would have pulled all the others along with him. He had to wait his chance and with a lap to go he made his move and pulled away. Crispin then had his work cut out to keep Dan at bay. Will had to have a bike change when his shifter lever became loose, but was soon on his way quite quickly, but Matt Macdonald passed him and took a fine finish in a very hard race.

As Michael started the last lap he used his lead to a benefit and rode hard on the grassed area so he could ride carefully within himself through the single track and wooded sections. He came across the line well clear of the others, with Crispin next up followed by Dan Lewis in third.

26th September 2011 - Wessex League Round 2 - Hargroves Cycles Swindon Cross Preview

Round 2 of the Wessex Cyclocross League takes place this Sunday(2nd October).  For those who are not familiar with the course there is a video below which will certainly help.

The course is mainly flat and open with some tighter turns and bumps in the woods in the far corner.  70% of the course is on open grassland with fast sweeping turns and usually a few planks to jump in the centre.  There is ample parking and plenty of open space to warm up on.  I reckon this is one of the best events of the year and a really good course - the weather looks good for the week so its likely to be dry and fast!

The Wessex Cyclo-Cross League got underway at the newly named Oxford Spires Academy near Cowley on Saturday, with the Bikezone Cycles 'Cross.

The course was spread out over a couple of football pitches and a very technical wooded section. Although the course was dry we did have a couple of small showers which managed to catch out a few riders who were willing to push on.

In the senior race, last season's league winner Michael Cotty, fresh back from filming cycling videos abroad, took up his position at the front of the grid with a strong presence of Hargroves riders and Lee Williams (Team Wiggle), the Welsh National Mountain Bike Champion who had won the Notts and Derby League event the previous weekend.

Michael had also coerced a couple of road riders across to the cross discipline, and the race also included Justin Hoy (Felt Racing) riding a mountain bike and riding on the unfamiliar grass instead of his favoured tarmac.

The race soon split into two small groups at the front. The first contained Lee Williams, Steve James and Luke Gray (Hargroves Cycles), while the second group was a little way and behind contained Michael Cotty, Dan Lewis (RAF CC) Crispin Doyle (Swindon RC) and Matt MacDonald (Stevens UK /Hargroves).

The leading group of three stayed together for almost the entire race until Luke Gray dropped back with a couple of laps to go.

This left Lee and Steve to take the bell running in tandem, but Steve attacked on the final lap and arrived into the finishing technical section first to solo to a win.

Lee Williams finished seven seconds down and was full of praise for the winner, saying he was "just too strong on the last lap".

The women's race was won by Claire Smith (Swindon RC) who finished well clear of Nina French (Wight Mountain). In fact Wight Mountain women finished 2nd 3rd and 4th with Nicky Volley finishing 6th.

The combined Veterans/Women/Junior race was very well supported by 66 riders with a large entry from the newly boosted Wight Mountain team coming across from the Isle of Wight.

The team had brought in Sean Williams, the winner of last season's veterans category, and a couple of women new to cyclo-cross. And the team will soon be added to by two other riders who were unable to race today.

The race started with the two junior Hargroves riders - Matt Hargroves and new acquisition Matt Woods who rode for Swindon RC last season - making all the early speed, with Sean Williams just hanging on with Mike Groves (Stevens UK/Hargroves) a little way behind him.

The two leaders were well matched and stayed together throughout the race although Woods did drop his chain at one point but managed to make up time to pick up the leader before too long.

Sean was now dropping away from the younger leaders but not losing ground to Groves in their own race. Others close to the front were Will Girvan (North Hants RC), Pete Smith (Team Jewson) and Dave McMullen now riding in Team GWR colours this season.

The youth race was convincingly won by Harvey Lowe (Hargroves Cycles) from Robbie Bolwell (Wight Mountain).

Harvey was involved in a crash at the start of the race but managed to get back on and then lap the whole field before taking the winning spoils.

The under-12 race was once again very well supported and only goes to prove that cyclo-cross in the Wessex area has a long future.

There were 28 young riders on the start line, some regular riders and a few new ones. They all rode a smaller course and completed nine laps finishing just before the first large shower of the day.

The next round of the Wessex League is on Sunday, October 2, at Lydiard Park in Swindon.
