Ian Field Takes 2nd XC marathon Champs Selkirk, Scotland
I have always wanted to do the XC marathon Champs since they moved to Selkirk, Scotland. A 80km loop through the Scottish borders with over 2000m of climbing with proper singletrack descents sounds like a good day out. With some heavy rain leading up to the event the course was, lets say tricky in places. After a couple of hours of racing there was an elite group of 5 of us at the front of the race with a healthy lead.
On one of the longest climbs of the race I went to the front to test the waters and soon me and Dan Fleeman of Meteltek were clear. With still an hour and a half of racing left we worked well together to establish a good lead over the remaining members of the group.
Up against an ex Cervelo road pro who was renowned for his climbing and has won the National hill climb champs before it was always going to be difficult to hang on to him up the climbs but I managed to stay in contention for the remaining parts. However by the time it came to the finale it had obviously taken more out of me than Dan and I had to settle for a silver medal.
After only 6 weeks of training I was really pleased to be so close(2secs) off the win of another National Title. This has given me a huge confidence boost towards the rest of the summers training. I now have a 5week block of training up to my next race of the summer Margam Park NPS.
