Matt Macdonald wins
Sunday 3rd August was the third round of the Cotswold Veldrijden Summer CX series at Newbury Showground.
It was hovering around the 21 degree mark and the ground was pretty much bone dry throughout except for a solitary muddy puddle.
41 riders lined up for the main race and I wasn’t gridded so I causally mixed in on about the 3rd of 4th row. As I currently am without a Cyclocross bike I was on my mountain bike, which I thought would have been a hindrance on such a fast flat course with not many technical obstacles.
As the race started I found myself at the front with 3 other riders, which soon split to just myself and Simon Ernest by the midway point of the first lap. Simon then took a slight wrong-turning on a section, which meant I had a gap. I looked at the race time on my Garmin & it was 5 minutes & I thought “this will be a long one on my own” so I pushed ahead & did 4 laps on my own. I could see that Simon was slowly catching so I eased the pace to let him catch up. It stayed as a pair for the remainder of the race until Simon put a dig on the last lap, he slipped on one of the corners towards the end of the last lap & I then gave everything to get the win by 3 seconds.
Nice to get a win on the first cross race of the year and hope to be much faster on a “proper bike”.
