National Cross Country Series Round 3 – Dan Tulett
This weekend was round 3 of The MTB national points series held at the hilly , Hopton woods in Shrewsbury. We arrived on the Saturday, Me, Jody and Ben Sumner set out to pre ride the course. We already knew what was ahead of us from last years course, there was to be steep climbs , technical descents at times with no real time to rest seeing as you were either going up or down all the time ! The descents were full of roots and tree stumps, sometimes being fast but sometimes having to be taken slow, as there were many switchbacks.
Race day. On the start line I was very nervous, but I know I could do well here as the course suited me greatly with all its climbing. As soon as the whistle blew we all flew off into the first climb, the longest one which was probably a quarter of the course . By the top I knew I had a decent lead on second. I pushed on through the remainder of the lap and for the rest of the second lap, eating my way into the Youth category field . Then coming into the singletrack on the last lap my chain came off and wrapped round itself 3 times and got wedged in-between the front mech and the frame, I had no choice but to freewheel down the descent and run my way over the finish line, luckily still finishing just under 3 minutes ahead of second .
