National Trophy Round 5 – Ian Field takes a back to back victory in Bradford
Ian Field took a back to back victory in the penultimate round of the National Trophy Cyclocross Series at Peel Park in Bradford.
This was Ian’s second appearance in the UK this season and his second win. Peel Park is well regarded as one of toughest courses on the National Trophy calendar but also a course that Ian has been very successful on.
As usual the race started at a ferocious pace but soon fragmented with a lead group of six riders including Ian Field and Under 23 series leader challenger Steve James. With 5 laps to go the lead group was now only Ian Field and series leader Paul Oldham. A swift move over the hurdles put Ian out in front and left Paul chasing to stay in contention. Ian showed his class and gradually capitalised on the move to take him to the finish line first and a well deserved victory.
Further down the field Steve James was fighting for position and ultimately for the green jersey prize. Current Under 23 series leader Ben Sumner couldn’t hold onto Steve’s strength on the undulating course with Steve finishing fourth and Ben some way down in fourteenth. With Adam Martin only in seventh Steve James had done enough to put himself in the green jersey.
Earlier on in the day Dan Tulett continued his unbeaten run of victories taking 30 seconds out of the nearest challenger David Barnes. Dan sits clearly at the top of the series table with only one round to go.
In the Vets races Steve Davies also continued and unbroken run with his fifth consecutive victory in the series. Crispin Doyle just missed the podium finishing in fifth position but grabbed important points to put him well clear in third overall in the series.
The final round of the series is on Sunday 5th January in Shrewsbury.
