Race Report: Joe Evans Apeldoorn International Track

Joe Writes:

Just thought I would update you with how my racing has been going over the past couple of weeks.

Last week I was away in Apeldoorn with the ODP doing my first bit of international competition on the track. On the first day I qualified comfortably for the scratch race final after getting away in a little move of 6 riders. Also on the first day I had a chance to do a derny race that I’ve never done before, it was an 8km race with four other derny’s on the track.  I came 2nd in my heat after not doing one before.

As a team we were really happy with our team pursuit time (4:22) losing by just 2 tenths of a second because we had to overtake the Czech team and the Danish team had a clear run. There was a points race qualifier (which we thought was the proper race) so we raced full gas and I gained a lap on the field and came in ninth after leading out Tao for second place and ripped up the field. Me and Tao also got 3rd in the madison after he had a touchdown.

The second day was a tough one with individual pursuit to start, I was disappointed with my time but I know where I can improve on it in the future. We had the scratch race final where I was in a break with 5 laps to go that I thought was going to stay away but got caught with a lap to go!! I got a lap again in the points final but we all lead out Matt Gibson as he was best placed and we destroyed the field with only one rider left at the finish. We were all up against the sprinters in the kilo so it was tough and then me and my partner Gabz Cullaigh were very tired for the madison so didn’t figure.
